After successfully reaching their ambitious Kickstarter goal of $35,000, local filmmakers Andrew Monbouquette and Dan Susman have now hired an editor to complete the final touches to their urban farming documentary, “Growing Cities”. When they’re not frantically compensating their loyal donors, they enjoy taking breaks alongside their tricked-out truck farm.
The candy-coated bubbly pop group Tilly and the Wall have announced their comeback. On Oct. 2nd, the group will release their latest album, “Heavy Mood,” on Team Love Records. The album is produced by Mike Mogis and features Clark Baechele of The Faint and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Since the first go-around was one hell of a ride, we’re too excited to contain ourselves about getting into the swing of things with the second installment of Benson’s First Friday. On Friday, July 6, expect the same amenities taking over the main drag of Benson, including a 30+ artist showcase, a catwalk fashion show, live music, after-dark street projections and booze. There will also be some new features to stir things up a bit, such as a fully functional kissing booth… YUM! See you out there, folks!

Hey daddy-o, be sure to save yourself some steam this weekend and jet on down to the House of Loom to twist and jive to Sunday’s sock hop. A host of retro clams will be spinning the sounds that emulate poodle skirts and malt shops of the 50’s. Also, Noah Sterba and the Cocktails will clog the stage with an umph-teen amount of musicians playing viciously and vicariously through the Yuppies frontman. It’s sure to be a hell of a gas. More info on the show here.
Hear Nebraska would like to send a big congratulations to the crew behind the local documentary Growing Cities about urban farming. Today, Growing Cities became indieWIRE’s project of the month, which gives the filmmakers the opportunity to speak with Sundance. Growing Cities put up a tough fight to the bitter end to pull through with the most votes over several other international films. And to that, we congratulate you, Growing Cities!
Local artist Evan Crown poses outside of Jane’e Health Market with his own creative projections as the backdrop in this photo. Evan provided visual entertainment as the sun dropped into nighttime Friday at Benson’s First Friday. His visuals may have been so mesmerizing that it could have been the cause of a car accident on 61st and Maple. To us, that cause is still yet to be determined.
Here is a sultry photo of the exterior of Make Believe studios shot by Alex Elliott of local hip-hop group Midtown Marauders.
Price tags a little too steep for The Shins or Against Me! tonight? The Barley St. Tavern has you covered with a fun and cheap 5 dollar show with More Machine Now Than Men and Video Ranger.
Every third Wednesday of the month this summer, The Reader will play host to an Old Market Walk with displays featured at 10 different galleries. This year, they have instituted a “Grand Patron Prize,” which means for every $10 spent, your name will enter a drawing for a miraculous prize at Michael’s restaurant. The first event is tomorrow, May 16, so be sure to get out there and walk the art in the market this summer!
After multiple premature CD release shows, the wait is finally over for the new Capgun Coup release. “Contextual Doom,” the band’s third album on ORG Music was officially released yesterday and is available to the masses beyond Omaha. It’s a great rock ‘n’ roll cut and everybody should buy the album here. I’m sure we will start seeing these t-shirts available for purchase in the near future before the band takes off for a month-long L.A. residency in the next few weeks.
A few weeks after Capgun Coup premiered their video, “My Boredom is Bored” with Hear Nebraska, they fired back with a new release. This time, the Capgun boys chose to debut their video “Q&A” with the Vinyl District. We’re delighted to see these guys pushing out videos for their third studio album, Contextual Doom, which will be released May 8 on ORG Music. To watch the video, click here.
